What is recorded here

Ballybar Upper is a lost castle hidden beneath grass and forgotten rubble in County Carlow. It may have been a home, a trap, or a boundary marker for people whose names never reached us. The land keeps its shape while human memory leaves it empty.
The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 OS Letters describe monument as 'heap of rubbish covered in grass …' (OSL 1839, 16). No visible surface traces.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
