Ardeenloun East castle stood on a scrub-covered rock pinnacle above Newcastle, belonging to John Power of Dunhill by 1641 after a mortgage default. Its rectangular foundations, thirteen by twelve metres, still overlook the parish church, preserving the shape of a house that once watched the valley. Whether Prendergast hands built it earlier or Power stones replaced them, the rock still holds the edge of that forgotten argument.

Situated on a pinnacle of scrub-covered rock outcrop. The castle of Newcastle belonged to John Power of Dunhill (WA025-045----) in 1641 through default on a mortgage by David Power from Shangarry, Co. Cork, (Simington 1942, 136). It may have belonged to Prendergast family in the 16th century (Garstin 1904, 306). The foundations of a rectangular structure (dims. 13m N-S; 12m E-W) survive overlooking Newcastle parish church (WA016-026001-) c.70m to SSE. John Power of Dunhill held Ardeenloun East Castle by 1641 following David Power's mortgage default. The site is significant as an example of 17th-century land and property disputes in the region.
