Beallagharee castle stood in level Galway grassland in 1574, held by Hugh McTirilagh before passing to the Blakes. It vanished so completely that only a faint rise remains, denying the eye the shape of its rooms and the shadow of its gate. A castle can lose its stones and still occupy the mind, forcing imagination to build what grass has erased.

In level grassland W of Ballygar village. In existence in 1574 when 'Beallagharee' castle was in the possession of 'Hugh McTirilagh' (Nolan 1901b, 119). According to OS Letters (O'Flanagan 1927, Vol. 1, 112), it belonged to the 'Blakes'. Apart from a faint rise in the ground surface, no visible surface trace survives. Ballygar Castle was held by Hugh McTirilagh in 1574 and is remembered as a historic site associated with local Gaelic lordship in west Ireland during the late 16th century.
