Settlement deserted

The precise location of the medieval settlement depicted on the 1657 Down Survey map of Coonagh barony (NLI, MS 718) as a cluster of dwellings located between Coonagh Castle (LI025-002002-) and Castletown Church has not been identified. The deserted settlement appears to have been located in the fields to the E of the Cahernahallia River and Castletown Church (LI025-004001-). In 1299, King Edward I granted a licence to Otho de Grandison, for a 'weekly market on Wednesday at his manor of Octonagh [Coonagh] in the county of Tipperary, Ireland, and of a yearly fair there for fifteen days, namely on the vigil the day and the morrow of St. Margaret the Virgin [July 19-21] and the 12 following days' (Cal. doc.
