What is recorded here

Deserted Castletown: marshy valley floor, Kilkenny, beside its castle and bawn. In 1548 Richard Archdeacon, called McCode, disputed the manor town with Baron John Grace. Linear earthworks still mark the field south and west of the castle, perhaps drains, perhaps streets of the lost town.
In marshy land on a valley floor. Associated with the castle (KK003-004001-) and bawn (KK003-004002-) of Castletown. In 1548, Richard Archdeacon, also called McCode [Cody] , was involved in a suit against Baron John Grace, concerning the manor town of Castletown, in Galmoy (Carrigan 1905, vol. 2, 285-6). Aerial photographs (CUCAP, AIG 22, 23) taken in 1963 indicate a number of linear earthworks in the field immediately S and W of the castle and bawn. Some of these may be related to drainage activity, however, some may relate to the medieval settlement at Castletown. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 9 September 2015
