Ballylarkin in County Kilkenny was a living castle town when the Down Survey mapped it in 1655, yet Thomas Shortall lost it to Cromwellian forfeiture in 1653 and the community vanished before anyone could carry its life elsewhere. The Shortall name stretches back to Robert, who received the land from Theobald de Troia between 1202 and 1218, while James commissioned a monument in St. Canice's Cathedral in 1507 and Oliver held the lordship until after 1662. What remains is a flat marshy valley where field banks and a rectangular platform were levelled during reclamation between 1986 and 1987, leaving behind an absence rather than a ruin.
