Scart Bridge

Triple-arch road limestone bridge over Upper Awbeg River, built c. 1790, of random rubble limestone construction with later concrete reinforcement to base of piers, having dressed limestone voussoirs to round-headed arches and cut limestone V-cutwaters to north-west elevation. Rubble coping stones to parapets.

The simple form of this road bridge is much enhanced by the textural variation created by the dressed voussoirs and cutwaters juxtaposed with rubble stone walls and parapets. The expansion of the road network throughout the country in the late eighteenth century produced many fine road bridges which attest to the engineering capabilities of their builders in supporting much greater loads than anticipated at construction. This simple bridge is valuable as an example of such a stone bridge existing largely in its early form.
