Clear water flowed beside Ballagh while an unknown hand scored a flat stone like a rough gravestone. The markings may have recorded a warning, a boundary, a love affair or a joke, but the stone itself has slipped from the field and memory.

In the 1930s Capt. D. B. O'Connell recorded that 'a flat flagstone lies in a field beside the river. It is shaped somewhat like a rough modern gravestone and is about 41/2 ft [1.37m] long by 3ft [0.9m] wide. One side of it is scored hither and over' (KAS). The precise location of this stone is not known and it could be in those parts of Ballagh townland which occur on OS 6-inch maps 95 and 103.
