Rock art in Ardrinane

What is recorded here

No visible trace remains in Ardrinane, though a cupped stone was once noted there. The stone may have moved, broken, or never existed at that exact spot. What is clear is that people marked stone in this landscape, and the landscape kept the claim alive long enough to be written down.
A 'cupped stone' was noted at this location by the Kerry Archaeological Survey. In a letter dated August 1972 (Finlay 1973, 22), P.J. O'Sullivan indicated that this may not be the correct location, but local inquiry failed to shed further light on the matter. Orpen (1912, 478-9) also recorded a stone with cups and circles 'behind Ardrinane' this may refer to the cup-marked stone in Brackloon (KE045-082----). The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 169. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 4 August 2013 In improved lush pasture (53m OD), on a generally level plateau. Good views of surrounding landscape and enclosed by higher ground all around. Beenoskee and Stradbally mountain clearly visible to N and gap in mountains to S, where Owenascaul River enters the sea. No visible surface trace. According to Cuppage (1986, 58), ‘A 'cupped stone' was noted at this location by the Kerry Archaeological Survey. In a letter dated August 1972 (Finlay 1973, 22), P.J. O'Sullivan indicated that this may not be the correct location, but local inquiry failed to shed further light on the matter.
