What is recorded here

Situated on flat bogland. Excavation revealed a wooden trackway (L 7m; Wth 3.5m) which partially overlies a fulacht fia (TN036-050067). The trackway consisted of a dumped mixture of heavy roundwood trunks set as transverses among brushwood and some cleft wood. A date of 979 BC +/- 9yrs was obtained from an oak used in the substructure of the track (Ó Néill 1999, Killoran 243, 82-3). The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 September 2008
