Tobernea

Holy well

What is recorded here

Tobernea Middle holds a hollow where water once flowed until a woman washed clothes in it, prompting the well to vanish in protest. Caoimhín Ó Danachair recorded this sudden departure in 1955, preserving a boundary between human desire and divine patience. The earth keeps its own counsel there, withdrawing rather than sharing itself with careless hands.
Ó Danachair (1955, 210) recorded the following details about this holy well; 'Tobernea (not in Gothic) on 1840 map. "The name of a spring well". OSNB. The only tradition is that the well moved when a woman washed clothes in it'. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 03 July 2019
