Leagane Castle vanished into a Limerick pasture, leaving only a circular earthwork and a suspicious heap of stones where Desmond and Kildare once contested the manor. Tobernea holy well waits fifty metres north, still dripping beside the ruin that Ordnance Survey men could not stop calling a castle. The land remembers more than the stones admit.

Westropp (1906-7, 173) recorded the following details about Leagane or Tobornea Castle; '1537 Jas. f.Desmond took the profits of the manor of "Tibernius," estate of late Tho., Earl of Kildare (Carew i., p. 132). 1629 W. Creagh, of Miltown, was appointed seneschal of Tuberneagh and other manors of G., Earl of Kildare, as formerly held by Peircy Smith (App. 9 Rep., y. 292). A heap of stones was called Tobornea C[astle], 1840 (O.S.L., 8, p. 344). A doubtful site'. In 1840 the Ordnance Survey described the site as; 'there was an old Castle in Leagaun Townland, of which nothing remains now but a heap of rubbish. it was called Leagaun (Líagán) Castle. Tobernea Castle, north of Leagaun Townland, is the name given for in the Name Book of this Parish' (O'Flanagan 1929, 99). The Ordnance Survey Name Books recorded that; 'near a road are the ruins of Tobernea Castle, nearly in the shape of a fort [LI047-073001-]' (OSNB Effin Parish).
