Suir Castle in Ballyvada, County Tipperary, is a four-storey limestone tower house built on a natural platform above the River Suir. Its walls contain a winding internal stair, guardrooms, blocked windows, a barrel-vaulted ceiling, machicolations and corner bartizans, all designed to defend a narrow entrance and expose attackers on the precipice edge. In 1654-6 the Civil Survey called it an old castle wanting repair and recorded John Cantwell of Mockarky as its owner, preserving a glimpse of the religious tensions of that period. Later foundations nearby mark a splendid mansion built by Lord Baron Massy, now reduced to fragments beside the older tower.
