New Bridge

Eight-arch road bridge, built c. 1800, over River Suir. Roughly coursed rubble limestone walls, dressed limestone voussoirs to segmental arches and having V-cutwaters to north elevation. Iron brackets inserted to south to carry pipe across river. Upper part of centre arch repaired in concrete.

This slightly humpback bridge is a technical, architectural and engineering achievement. It is solidly constructed with heavy walls which are counterbalanced by the high, elegant arches with well-cut voussoirs, the latter creating an interesting and aesthetically pleasing textural contrast against the rubble limestone walls. The bridge serves as a reminder of the quality of the engineering and local craftsmen's skills in the early nineteenth century.
