Athassel Priory (TS068-013----) was built c. 1200 by William de Burgo for the Canons Regular of St. Augustine and confirmed by King John in 1205 (Gwynn and Hadcock 1988, 157-8). Outside its walls there was a thriving town which was burned, along with the abbey, in 1319 by Lord Maurice FitzThomas and in 1329 by Bryan O'Brien (Harbison 1970, 220). A grant in 1562 to Thomas Earl of Ormond and Ossory by Philip and Mary includes the 'site of the priory of Athasshell, a mill, the demesne lands and land in Athasshell ... and the lands of the old town of Athasshell' (Cochrane 1909, 281). This was followed by a lease in 1570 and 1582 again to the Earl of 'the old town of Athasshell' (ibid.). There is no visible trace of this settlement above ground.
