Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Temora

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Mound and chest: a ringfort, not a fairy tale. Twenty-three metres across and three and a half metres high, it stands on level pasture in Temora, County Offaly. No ditch, no outer bank, no visible gate. The shape is clear; the entry is not. That absence is the interesting part. A fort without a door may have had one buried, or never have needed one. Either way, the earth still holds its shape.
On level pasture land. Raised circular flat topped platform (diam 23m N-S; 22m E-W; ext. H 3.5m) constructed from earthen material with no evidence of an enclosing fosse or external bank. No visible entrance feature located. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 May 2011
