What is recorded here

No visible trace remains of the granite standing stone in Tankardstown, though O'Toole measured it at 1.4m high and 2m around in 1939. Whatever hand set it or tradition it marked has vanished with the stone itself, leaving only the town name and a gap where the rock stood.

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 According to O'Toole (JRSAI 1939, 104), stone was of granite (H 1.4m; girth 2m). No visible trace.

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
