What is recorded here

Kinneigh Church in County Carlow has lost its walls but keeps its shape: a long nave and shorter chancel buried under grass, with a cross base beside the west end and graves marked by Maltese crosses. The ruins do not explain themselves; they invite invention. Perhaps people gathered there for marriage, burial, feast or fear, and left behind only stones that resist memory.
The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. 'Kinneigh Church'. Present remains consist of grass-covered foundations (max. H 1.5m) of nave and chancel structure, aligned E-W, (nave, 12.8m x 7.3m; chancel, 7.3m x 4.6m). Small, narrow socketed cross base N of W gable (CW003-005004-). Graveslab (CW003-005003-) with two Maltese crosses in relief lies in the SE quadrant of the graveyard (CW003-005002-). Close by, approximately circular boulder with a rectangular mortice (CW003-005005-). Boulder with conical depression (diam. 0.2m; D 0.2m) beside N wall of nave by W gable. Earthfast stone (CW003-005006-) with single bullaun basin to W of graveyard. To N of church and graveyard aerial photographs (CUCAP AYP 24, 25) show complex of earthworks (CW003-005007-), including rectangular enclosure(CW003-005008-), possibly moated site. These features are now barely discernible on the ground. (JKAS 1932, 86-88) Revised by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 7 September 2009
