Haroldstown once held a castle beside its church and abbey, but O'Donovan found no definite traces in 1839. The site has surrendered even that much to grass, forgetting and time. What remains is a ghost address, waiting for someone to dig through patience rather than soil.

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Mentioned by O'Donovan (OSL 1839, 145-6) who said that no definite traces of castle were then standing. Adjacent to church (CW004-038-----) and possible abbey (CW004-037----). No visible trace.

Haroldstown Castle was built in the 17th century by the Harold family, a prominent local landowning family in County Carlow. The site is important as it reflects the pattern of early modern castle building in Ireland and the social structure of the time.

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
