Sendonagh, also called Old-Sonday, was already a ruinous castle when Sir Robert Nugent received it in 1609 with forty messuages, forty gardens and broad acres of arable land, pasture, moor, bog, meadow and marsh. The names changed, the boundary line stretched, and the castle's shape may have sunk into the memory of the land. If a house later rose on that same ground, it stood inside an older wound, taking the shape of what the castle had already forgotten.

A house annotated as 'Shandona' on the current ed. OS 6-inch map may have been built on the site of the medieval castle of 'Sendonagh' described as a 'ruinous castle' in a land grant of 1609. In this year Sir Robert Nugent of Walshestown Castle (WM018-155----) was granted 'in Sendonagh [Shanonagh] otherwise Old-Sonday, a ruinous castle, 40 messuages, 40 gardens, and a plowland containing 140a arable great measure, 40a pasture, 40a moor, 40a bog, 40a meadow, 40a marsh' (Cal. pat. rolls Ire., Jas I, 196). Shanonagh, also known as Sendonagh, was a medieval castle recorded as ruinous in a 1609 land grant associated with Sir Robert Nug. It is remembered as an example of early modern land consolidation and castle decay in post-Tudor Ireland.
