Cross in Roughan — Report the wrong picture

Half a cross stands in Roughan while its missing shaft lies buried or broken beneath the grass. The top part watches the road from Corofin, but the bottom part vanished from the slope where it once leaned. Whatever hand struck it or time itself, the cross still points upward because half of it refuses to disappear.

This record is for the original location of portion of a cross shaft depicted leaning against a Tau cross (CL016-052002-/CL017-116003-) on a S-facing slope, c. 15m to the S of the Leamaneh to Kilnaboy road. The stone fragment ‘may have formed the bottom of the shaft of the [tau] cross’ (Harbison 2009, 32). The fragment (L 0.48m; Wth 0.28m; T 0.1m) is no longer in situ and is kept in the OPW depot in Athenry under the SMR number GA084-151005-.The upper, decorated portion of the tau cross is currently on display in the old protestant church of Corofin (CL017-116001-), which now serves as an interpretative centre.
