Beneath Rampark, a hidden chamber waited with a trapdoor between upper and lower passages, its roof broken long before modern tools touched the soil. Pots and animal bones scattered across the floor like a forgotten meal, while air-vents suggested people still expected to breathe inside. The nearby burial ground and second passage imply this was no ordinary hole, but a lived-under world where the dead and the living shared one dark address.
Discovered during the construction works associated with a new dwelling (Excavation Licence No. 04E1559). (Excavation Licence No. 04E1559). It 'consisted of an upper passage (L. 4.5m) and lower passage (L. 8m) linked by a trapdoor. Both passages were served by air-vents. The roof had evidently collapsed or been removed in ancient times at the point of recent access. A large quantity of Man-made underground passage ware and animal bone was found on the passage floor below the break in the roof. The backfilled passage heading towards the original entrance was not investigated.' (Campbell 2007, 268-9). Found alongside an Early Christian burial ground (LH008-121----), a second Man-made underground passage (LH008-125----), a furnace (LH008-126----) and a number of pits. (Campbell 2007, 268-9)
