What is recorded here

Indicated is a vanished ringfort south of Carrickgollogan, County Dublin, where medieval pottery still sleeps beneath improved pasture. Maps drawn decades apart argued about whether it wore one bank or two, but the land stopped answering in 1950 when the site was cleared. Aerial shadows now reveal its hidden rings and fosses, preserving what human feet forgot. The Sugar Loaf Mountain still watches the empty field, holding the shape of a fort no longer visible to ordinary sight.

This ringfort is located in improved pasture S of Carrickgollogan with views S to the Sugar Loaf Mountain. It is shown on the 1843 OS 6-inch map as a large univallate enclosure yet the 1937 OS ed. shows the northern half of a bivallate enclosure on the site (int. diam. c. 80m; ext. diam. c. 120m). The site was cleared c. 1950 leaving no visible trace at ground level. It does appear in cropmark form on an aerial photograph (CUCAP, BDP 22) as two levelled banks with external fosses from the SSE to the SW. The photograph also shows linear cropmarks to the SE of the levelled enclosure which may be part of an associated field system. Archaeological test excavation of the site was undertaken in 2002 as part of an assessment for the proposed new Dún Laoghaire Golf Course.
