Ardnurcher was a defended waypoint on the uncertain margin between colonial and Gaelic Ireland, where a road from the Borders split at a castle gateway to reach a church and a market. It lost that role when MacEochagain took the castle in 1422, and the fields forgot the shape of the town. Under the pasture ridge, small rectangular enclosures still wait for rain or light to give back their outlines.
