No visible entrance remains on the 36-metre stone-and-earth ring at Monascallaghan, though drystone work still lines both faces of its low bank. The missing gateway does not mean the circle is complete or finished; it means the human edge has blurred. A road now passes beside the fort, carrying past what once kept its own boundary.

On a NE-facing slope in pasture. A raised circular area (diam. 35.9m) enclosed by a low bank of earth and stone (Wth 4m; H 0.3-0.9m). Drystone masonry is visible on both faces of the bank. Faint traces of an external fosse (Wth 3.2m; D 0.1m) are evident from E-S-SW. The original entrance is not recognisable. At SSW a NW-SE roadway borders the monument. Compiled by: Patrick F.
