Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Milltown (rathconrath By., Churchtown Ed)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Situated on a low rise, in undulating pasture, with good views to E and SE. Monument described as a roughly circular-shaped area (diam. 33.4m) enclosed by a bank with no trace of a fosse or entrance feature. The monument is much disturbed and the low bank is visible from NW-N and from ESE-SE-S. The bank has been reduced to a scarp from WSW-NW and the exterior has been quarried at NW. The interior has a SSE-facing slope and has traces of cultivation ridges running WSW-ENE. There is evidence of quarrying in the SE quadrant and there are facing stones set on edge defining the quarry scarp and enclosing bank at this location. A field boundary running NW-SE abuts the monument at SW. See attached profile of monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI. Compiled by Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien. Date of upload: 10 September 2019
