Dunmoe Castle stands above the River Boyne in County Meath, a four-storey stronghold built in the fifteenth century that survived Cromwellian fire in 1649 and the Battle of the Boyne in 1690 with little harm. The Darcy family held it, and Thomas Darcy owned three hundred and ninety-five acres there in 1640. A rebel fire during the 1798 rebellion finally broke its frame, leaving only two walls to mark the rooms where people once lived, watched the water and waited for danger.
