Man-made underground passage in Newtownbalregan

The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Drystone-built Man-made underground passage, cross-shaped in plan, consisting of three passages, a gallery and beehive chamber. Passage 1 (L 5m, Wth 0.7m, H 0.7m) curves gently SW-N. A gallery (L 4.5m, Wth 0.8m, H 0.7m) leads off NE from mid passage. Passage 2 (L 0.6m, Wth 0.7m) leads off W from the middle of Passage 1 and is blocked by collapse. At the N end of Passage 1 is a beehive chamber (diam. 2.4m, H 1.2m) with the entrance to a third passage in its NW side now blocked by collapse. (CLAJ 1956, 445-7)
