Knockilly held a man-made underground passage twenty yards west of its fort before infill erased the entrance. Bowman recorded the loss in 1934, preserving the shape of what disappeared rather than pretending the ground still hid a tunnel. The forgotten diggers may have built a refuge, a boundary marker or a private way of moving through rain and darkness.

Bowman (1934, 148) noted that 'a Man-made underground passage now filled in, was 20 yards West of fort' (CO015-003---). No visible surface trace.
