Kilmaclenine holds a man-made underground passage in the centre of a levelled ringfort, marked by an oval hollow stretching east to west. The small dark chamber may have served as a hidden shelter, a storage pit, or a place for quiet ritual when storms struck or danger approached. Whatever it contained, the builders shaped the earth deliberately and left the passage buried beneath a living landscape.
