Longgraigue House

Detached three-bay single-storey gate lodge, extant 1902, on a rectangular plan with single-bay single-storey side elevations. Now disused. Hipped slate roof with pressed or rolled lead-covered roll moulded clay ridge tiles, cut-granite central chimney stack having cut-granite capping supporting terracotta pots, and no rainwater goods surviving on slightly overhanging eaves. Limewashed lime rendered walls. Ogee-headed central door opening with cut-granite step threshold, and remains of doorcase with clustered colonettes framing replacement sheet steel door having overlight. Ogee-headed flanking window openings in bipartite arrangement with cut-granite sills, carved timber mullions, and concealed dressings framing timber casement windows having overlights. Set back from line of road at entrance to grounds of Longgraigue House.

A gate lodge clearly illustrating the continued development or "improvement" of the Longgraigue House estate by Joseph William Deane (1815-1908) with the architectural value of the composition, one recalling contemporary gate lodges at Healthfield House (see 15703712); Stokestown House (see 15703404); and nearby Raheenduff House (see 15704021), confirmed by such attributes as the compact rectilinear plan form centred on the remains of a doorcase demonstrating good quality workmanship; the curvilinear profile of the openings underpinning a "picturesque" theme with those openings showing pretty lattice glazing patterns; and the slightly oversailing roofline. A prolonged period of unoccupancy notwithstanding, the elementary form and massing survive intact together with substantial quantities of the original fabric, thus upholding the character or integrity of a gate lodge forming part of a neat self-contained group alongside an adjacent gateway (see 15704029) with the resulting ensemble making a pleasing visual statement in a sylvan street scene.
