What is recorded here
Tobernea Castle stood inside a circular earthen bawn nearly thirty metres across, but age and perhaps ploughs have reduced that defence to a faint dotted outline in pasture. The earthwork still circles the castle site near Tobernea Milddle, while a holy well waits fifty-five metres to the north-northwest. What remains is less a monument than a suggestion: a ghost line in grass, marking the place where stone, soil and memory once held together.
In pasture 20m S of the townland boundary with Tobernea Milddle. Tobernea holy well (LI047-089----) 55m to NNW. Earthwork associated with site of Tobernea Castle (LI074-073002-) located in the centre of the earthwork. Depicted on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map as a raised roughly circular-shaped platform (diam. c. 29m) defined by a scarp with fosse from SE-S-SW. Levelled earthwork is visible as a roughly circular-shaped cropmark defined by a fosse on Google Earth orthoimages. Earthwork may be the remains of an earthen bawn of Tobernea Castle.
See attached Google Earth orthoimages.
