Knockaunnarelic Graveyard

Burial ground

What is recorded here

Knockaunnarelic Graveyard is a burial ground in County Carlow, Ireland. O'Donovan found no church remains inside the graveyard, suggesting the dead were laid to rest beneath an open sky rather than beside a building. The absence of a church wall makes the place feel both stripped bare and strangely honest, as if the living once walked among the graves without a roof or altar to mark the boundary between the worlds.
The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 05 August 2011 Revised by: Claire Breen Shown on 1839 'OS 6-inch' map as subrectangular area. According to O'Donovan (OSL 1839, 25), no indications of church within graveyard.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
