What is recorded here

Kilscannell is called a fairy fort because people believed the fairies lived there, but the circular shape and solid wall suggest human hands built it for defence or residence. It stood in open pasture large enough for a small household to walk inside without touching the outer bank. The land has changed since the survey recorded it, and the fort has disappeared under foot or plough. What remains is a name that preserves the shape of a building no longer visible.

In level pasture. Monument, depicted on 1841 OS 6-inch map as embanked circular enclosure (diam. c. 20m), has been levelled. No trace of monument evident when inspected. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
