Road

Situated on flat bogland. Excavation revealed a short wooden track (dims. 3m x 1m) leading to a hurdle (dims. 2.5m x 2m) which had revealed evidence for four phases of construction. Initially a foundation layer (dims. 4m x 3m) of roundwood was placed on top of tree stumps which was followed by a second layer (dims. 5m x 4m) of mixed wood which represented the first surface of the track. This was followed by the construction of a hurdle at the NE edge of the track which in the final phase was extended by placing another layer (dims. 4m x 1.5m) of substantial roundwood at the W edge of the hurdle (Cross 1999, 98-9). This track has been dated to 405-180 BC (Ó Néill 2000, Killoran 315, 187). The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary.
