Enclosure in Kildoon — Report the wrong picture

Kildoon’s enclosure has vanished because sand diggers took the esker itself. They cut east, west and south until the ridge disappeared, erasing the fort Dowling remembered on that high ground. The earth gave up its shape for profit, leaving behind only the memory of a lost wall.

On a narrow, steep-sided esker, portions of which have been quarried away to the E, W and S. According to Dowling (1935-45, 454), ‘On a high esker which has been almost completely excavated by sand diggers a Dun or Fort formerly existed …’. The upper surface of the esker has also been partially quarried and no recognisable surface trace of a monument survives. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 16 October 2012
