Marianne dropped the last coin into the bowl and waited for the kitchen to answer. It did not ring. It breathed, pulling every living shadow in Johnstown House through the floor and into the castle beneath. She followed the tilt of the building, not the stairs, because the house had stopped pretending it was only a house.

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Castle recorded here on Down Survey (1655-6) map. Probably on site or immediate vicinity of Johnstown House, which has extensive cellars not related to above-ground eighteenth-century house.

Johnstown House was built in the 18th century by members of the Prendergast family, who were prominent landowners in the region. It is remembered as a fine example of Georgian architecture and as a historic seat associated with one of Carlow's leading families.
