What is recorded here

Five houses are depicted on the mid-17th century Down Survey map (1655-6), situated to the N, W and S of Garrangibbon castle (TS078-018002-). In 1640 the proprietor of Garrangibbon was 'James Tobyn...Irish Papist' and 'Upon this land stands a ... slate house wanting repaire' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 143), this is also described in the Civil Survey (1654-6) as a stone house (ibid. 153). There is no trace of any of these houses at ground level. The present South Lodge House is of late 18th/19th century date and externally does not appear to have any early fabric, the houses remain unlocated within the townland.
