Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Highpark

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not fairy creations. They are human ringforts, often old, where ordinary life happened before records began. The fairy name comes later. It appears when the true use is forgotten, when the shape still stands but the people are gone. In that gap, the imaginations of later times move in. They fill the empty meaning with sparks, creatures and warning. That is why these places sound like magic. They are memory having lost its facts.
Situated on a gentle NW-facing slope in rolling pasture. Monument is evident as a roughly circular area (30m NW-SE; 22m NE-SW) enclosed by a bank of earth-and-stone (ext. H 0.5m; Wth 0.6m; int. H 0.2m). The interior is uneven and slopes down to W. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 18 June 2013

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
