What is recorded here
Sheepfold is a D-shaped drystone enclosure beside Coomclogherane Lake in County Kerry, Ireland, where a curving wall and outcropping rock still mark a small southern entrance. Ferns fill the centre, and a possible boulder-burial lies beneath them, suggesting the fold may have been more than a place for livestock. The 1895 map drew it as a rectangle, but the land has since slipped back into its own shape, keeping the boundary alive while hiding its purpose in green shadow.
In rough hill pasture, on a level area at the foot of a steep W-facing slope, c. 30m from the E shore of Coomclogherane Lake. A D-shaped area (6.5m N-S) defined by a curving drystone wall (T c. 0.45m; H c. 0.7m) and by a straight N side (L 6.9m) formed by outcropping rock. Loose stones are scattered along the lower course of the wall. There is an entrance at S. The interior is covered with ferns and there is a possible boulder-burial (KE094-028001-) at the centre. This enclosure is indicated on the 1895 OS 6-inch map as a rectangular area (c. 10m N-S; c. 8m E-W).
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
