What is recorded here
The fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Flowerhill is in County Sligo, Ireland. It occupies a pasture on the southwest-facing slope of a drumlin and presents an oval shape measuring 18.8 metres north-south and 14.6 metres east-west. An earthen bank encloses the space with gaps at the north and south, while an external fosse appears along the northeast and east. The east interior is cut into the hillside, but the west interior rises 0.55 metres above external ground to compensate for the slope.
In pasture, on the SW-facing slope of a drumlin. An oval area (18.8m N-S; 14.6m E-W) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 2m; int. H 0.8m; ext. H 1m) with gaps at N and S. An external fosse (Wth 2.5; D 0.4m) is evident NE-E and an external step (Wth 2m; H 0.2m) along the outer edge of the bank SW-NW. There is a step (Wth 1m; H 1.8m) along the inside of the bank NE-SE. The E portion of the level interior is cut into the hillside and the W portion is raised 0.55m above external ground level to compensate for the hillslope. The perimeter is overgrown with bushes.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005).
