What is recorded here
Heat-shattered stones and a fragment of cremated bone still rest inside the shallow rectangular trough at Farrandreg. The site is a fulacht fia, an ancient cooking or bathing place where water was heated by dropping glowing stones into the basin. People may have gathered there to prepare food, clean the body or mark a loss before forgetting the name of the dead.
Discovered during archaeological monitoring of topsoil removal (Excavation Licence No. 98E0573). Excavation revealed a sub-rectangular trough (L 1.6m; Wth 0.85m; D 0.29m), filled with a burnt black clay which contained inclusions of heat shattered stones and a fragment of cremated bone. To the N of the trough was a layer of burnt clay and stones which sealed a small pit (Wth 0.28m; D 0.23m), and to the S of the trough were three small pits. (Lynch 2000, 147)
