Font in Townparks (upper Dundalk By.)

The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Rests on a large boulder in the grounds of St. Nicholas's Catholic Church. According to tradition it belonged originally to the church of the Franciscan Monastery at Seatown and was later used as a baptismal font in the old chapel in Chapel Lane, which was built in 1750. The font is a large irregular shaped boulder with an uneven cavity forming the basin. (CLAJ 1910, 305-6)
