What is recorded here

Killoughternane holds a small stone ringfort where a low wall encloses a subcircular space barely large enough for a handful of people. Its northern and southern gaps may be later damage, but they also suggest the fort was never meant to be a sealed trap. A family, a trader or a fleeing person may have stood inside it, listening for footsteps on the Carlow fields. The fairy name comes later, yet it fits the place because small ancient houses often sound like magic when their makers disappear.

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Small subcircular area (12.5m NE-SW, 10.3m NW-SE) enclosed by low grass-covered stone wall (H 0.5-0.7m; T 1m). Gaps at N and S; neither appears to be original.
