Fairy fort / ringfort in Townparks

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Townparks, County Leitrim: a circular enclosure marked on the OS 25-inch map, now housing on a gentle east-facing slope where no earthwork remains visible. The 1945 Ordnance Survey field memorandum called it the site of an ancient fort whose earthwork had been demolished. What is left is a shape in memory: a ring large enough to hold children, dogs, rain and the idea that the land once kept an edge.
Indicated as a circular enclosure only on the OS 25-inch map. It is situated on a gentle E-facing slope within the grounds of a school, but the area is now devoted to housing. No archaeological feature is visible at ground level in a largely open area. In the Ordnance Survey Field Memorandum of 11th May, 1945 the monument was described as a 'Lios (Site of)' which was 'The site of an ancient earthwork previously shown on OS maps as a fort. The earthwork has since been demolished' (OSFM). Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of revised upload: 14 October, 2019
