Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Scart (orrery and Kilmore By., Ballyclogh Par.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Scart, County Cork: a levelled earthen bank and outside ditch, roughly forty metres across, still traceable in cropmarks. The name suggests people long ago refused to explain it, pointing instead at fairy ownership. A D-shaped mark inside the circle may have been a building, a byre, or a boundary for something no human would enter.
Cropmark of levelled bank and external fosse of roughly circular enclosure (diam. c. 40m) visible in aerial photograph (CASAP, July 1989). D-shaped feature adjacent to bank noted also as cropmark in NE quadrant of interior. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
