Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Gorteen (connello Upper By., Feenagh Ed)

Fairy fort in Gorteen, a 32-metre earthen ring with a shallow fosse, sits half-swallowed by pasture and overgrowth. Its bank rises barely higher than a child’s knee inside but stands taller outside, as if shaped for watching rather than keeping out. The field boundary has cut through the eastern ditch, and the land slopes gently eastward into ordinary farmland. People may have lived there before the name changed, or the name may have come first and the fort followed it into belief. Either way the ring remains, quiet and unbroken except where the fence line took its share.
