Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Burnellstown

Situated on a slight rise, in relatively low lying, gently undulating pasture, with views restricted due to surrounding higher ground. Earthwork (WM026-104----) lies c. 70m to NE. Depicted on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map as a circular-shaped earthwork annotated ‘fort’. Monument described in 1971 as a much disturbed oval-shaped area (approx. dims. 36m NE-SW; 28m NW-SE) defined by a scarp and external fosse with entrance represented by a slight ramp (Wth at top 2m; overall Wth 5.6m) at E. The scarp (H 1.1m) is visible from NNE-E-S-W and is levelled from W-N-NNE. There is a large hole dug into the base of the scarp at WSW. There are traces of a narrow and shallow fosse which is visible all around although is very vague at SSE. The interior rises from the perimeter towards the centre and has vague traces of cultivation ridges running NE-SW. Compiled by Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien.
