Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballyourane

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Ballyourane, County Cork: an earthen ringfort on a break in the NE-facing slope. Its circular bank, once stone-faced and about 1.7m high, still shows as an arc within the field fence to the NNW. People may have lived, fenced or forgotten it there; the earth keeps its shape while the story waits to be remembered.
In pasture, on break in NE-facing slope. Hachured circular enclosure on OS 6-inch map (1902); arc of earthen, stone-faced bank (H 1.7m) survives in field fence system to NNW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
