Death and memory tangled beneath the tower, while quern stones and wooden bowls surfaced elsewhere, suggesting a lived-in settlement rather than a abandoned shrine. The enclosure may have been a dwelling as much as a church, its walls curving around a place where the sacred and domestic refused separation.

On S-facing slope, overlooking River Blackwater to W. Round tower (13907) on high ground towards N end of site; graveyard and site of church (14612) c. 55m to S; possible Man-made underground passage (13425) under site of round tower. No clear evidence for enclosing element evident, although line of road to NW and SW may indicate curve of enclosure. Sketch from OS archives for 1844 (Walsh 1987a, 144-5) depicts 'site of old church yard walls'. N-S wall connects NW corner of church with round tower and forms W side of rectangular enclosure (c. 17.5m N-S; c. 37.5m E-W), on N side of graveyard (ibid.). Interior of rectangular enclosure described as 'being more irregular than any other portion to the same field' (ibid.). O'Flanagan (1844, 166) noted walls of a structure traceable outside graveyard, apparently a dwelling 'of the castellated kind', said to be standing to a considerable height c. 1800. Pair of large quern stones (diam. 2ft 6in) found 'many years ago' in field adjoining and to SW of graveyard, a wooden bowl (diam. 16in, D 5in) was found in bog to SW of church site (Bowman 1934, 664).
